Steeped in romance, each mud and thatch suite is reminiscent of a bygone era, with the stilted, handcrafted structures adorned in graceful antiques, grand chandeliers and African treasures. Each extraordinary camp operates independently with its own central living and dining areas and viewing decks. Early settler-style interiors combine silver, gold and ruby colours under banana-leaf ceilings and grass roofs. Beaded chandeliers hang above large gilt mirrors, and antiques, plump cushions, voluptuous raw silk curtains and leather-backed chairs blend harmoniously with African art elements.
The domed dining room, with its fireplace, crystal, silver and massive wooden platters, makes every meal a special occasion. Delicious Pan-African cuisine may also be enjoyed on the outdoor dining deck.
NGORONGORO SERENA LODGE
Ngorongoro Serena Lodge is situated at the rim of the crater at an elevation of about 7,000 feet. It consists of 75 comfortable and spacious rooms. All rooms have private stone terraces with spectacular uninterrupted views of the below crater. Furniture and fixtures are simple and modest. The rooms feature brass lamps, leather headboards, wildwood mirrors, and local carvings. There is a convenient little writing desk and chair in front of the bed. The rooms are pleasantly decorated with stylized gazelles and other animals painted on the walls. Each room is heated which is critical, as it can get quite cold up on the crater rim at night. The bathrooms are small but functional and include a shower and bathtub.
The main guest areas are very impressive and offer surreal views of the below crater from massive windows and a spacious outdoor terrace. The massive dining room is well decorated with various artifacts, sculptures and wooden carvings. There is also a particularly good gift shop located on the premises.
NGORONGORO SOPA LODGE
Opened in 1992, the lodge can accommodate 190 guests in 92 suites, each enjoying wall-to-wall carpeting, central heating, a private lounge with a mini bar, a bedroom with two queen size beds and ample room for a third, an en-suite bathroom with shaver sockets and a hair dryer, and a private solarium which offers stunning views either down into the crater floor below or of the setting sun over the western horizon.
The lodge has direct-dial satellite telephone facilities as well as satellite television and wildlife-video-film options.
The lodge's shops stock a wide selection of curios, gift items, clothing, film, sweets, postcards, personal requisites and toiletries.
A swimming pool is situated on the very edge of the crater itself and the water is bracing, even invigorating to say the least, at any time of year.
NGORONGORO WILDLIFE LODGE
Ngorongoro Wildlife Lodge commands a stunning location on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater directly above the yellow fever forest.
The lodge has 75 rooms, including one presidential suite and two junior suites. All have a fabulous view over the crater and are equipped with central heating system, mosquito nets and hot water shower.
Beautiful restaurants and bars, lounge, swimming pool, wildlife library and game drives. Bush barbecues organized upon request.
BASIC CAMPING - SIMBA OR KUDU CAMPSITES
Stay in sleeping bags and tents. Basic camping safaris use medium sized canvas tents with mosquito tenting. Campgrounds have flush toilets and hot showers. They have a "clubhouse" where you dine, and sometimes there is evening entertainment.
